How’s the racing? I’ve never watched one of these

This was my first. It was really interesting. LV motor speedway has a 2 part road course and both Champ truck and Chump car got track time over the weekend. Also a local Corvette club was out. It was really fun to watch, we went to the paddock and talked with all the drivers, but especially Mike Morgan, truck number 88 (see image above), he’s a really awesome guy. I have a signed shirt and poster he gave me free.

The racing itself is a series of 20 minute races. Points are used to determine the actual season winner, and there’s a podium race as well. For the $20/person weekend pass we saw 8 champ truck races and 6 chump car races. Very worth it, the drive from Denver, less so. Took about 11 hours each way.

That’s pretty cool - I have no knowledge of large vehicle engines and such, so what size engines and/or what kind of power do these engines normally put out? I’d imagine they’re some sort of diesel/turbodiesel?

All turbo diesel I6’s.

From 8L to 16L.

Power starts at about 500hp and 1000 ft/lbs.

All are manual, with welded diffs. (Race rules)

Most used 5 and 6 speed semi (un-synchronized) boxes.

I love all these numbers. It’s great when you have an engine that makes the Viper displacement look like a pansy's engine.

Yep. That #88 truck has a mack 16L.

The driver, Mike Morgan, is a mack mechanic. IIRC he won this rears series on points, but a little tangle got him black flagged with 5 minutes to go on the podium race. :(

I went to the Champ Truck races here at Portland Raceway. The racing was pretty cool and it was a pretty good time. Lots of spins and trucks going off as they tried to navigate the road course. Really fun to watch.

Yeah. A few times they got a little in the dirt but only one spin. #3 tried to spin out #88 as 88 was passing. Both got black flagged. 88 lost the podium race as a result. Think he still won the series on points though.
